Structural damage detection from vibration

Detect and locate damage in a test structure from its vibration response.

The brief

Bridges and buildings change how they shake when something inside weakens. Use accelerometer recordings from a laboratory frame with simulated damage (or vibration you simulate yourself) to find which natural frequencies and mode shapes change, and build a method to detect damage and say where it is. Good looks like: natural frequencies found from the data, damage detected in a held-out set, and a clear statement of what the method cannot see.

What you will build

  1. Load or simulate recordings for healthy and damaged states
  2. Find natural frequencies and mode shapes
  3. Compare healthy and damaged states
  4. Build a damage detector and locator
  5. Test on held-out damage cases
  6. Explain results for a bridge engineer
