Build a small programming language interpreter

Write an interpreter for a tiny language with variables, loops and functions, with helpful error messages.

The brief

Writing a language is the best way to understand how code runs. Design a small language, write its scanner, parser and interpreter, and add error messages that say what is wrong and where, then use it to solve ten programming exercises. Good looks like: a test suite of programs and expected output, clear error messages, and a short language guide.

What you will build

  1. Design the syntax and write a grammar
  2. Write the scanner and parser
  3. Build the interpreter with variables, loops and functions
  4. Add line numbers to error messages
  5. Write tests and ten example programs
  6. Document the language
