Portfolio selection with a quantum optimiser

Pick the best shares from a small set with QAOA and compare it honestly with classical methods.

The brief

Choosing which shares to hold is a hard combinatorial problem, and quantum optimisers are tried on it. Formulate a small portfolio selection as a QUBO problem, solve it with QAOA on a simulator, and compare with brute force and a classical solver on quality and run time. Good looks like: correct formulation, results across several problem sizes, and an honest conclusion about whether there is any advantage today.

What you will build

  1. Formulate portfolio selection as a QUBO
  2. Solve small cases exactly as a reference
  3. Implement QAOA with a simulator
  4. Tune the circuit depth and optimiser
  5. Compare with a classical solver
  6. Write an honest conclusion
