River flood early warning
Forecast river level a day or two ahead from rainfall and upstream levels and trigger a warning.
The brief
Floods give hours of warning at best, and a good forecast saves lives. Using rainfall and river level records, build a model that forecasts the level at a town one to two days ahead, test it on past floods, and design a warning system with levels, messages and false alarm control. Good looks like: forecast skill measured on flood events, a warning rule with lead time, and a message in local languages.
