Road condition survey from phone sensors

Use a phone's accelerometer to find potholes and rough roads, and map where repair is needed first.

The brief

Road surveys by specialist vehicles are costly and rare. Use a phone's accelerometer and GPS during a drive to detect potholes and measure roughness, map the worst stretches, and rank them for repair by roughness and traffic. Good looks like: potholes detected against a hand-marked drive, a roughness score per 100 metres, and a priority list for a municipal engineer.

What you will build

  1. Record accelerometer and GPS data on a drive
  2. Filter and align the signals
  3. Detect pothole events
  4. Compute a roughness score per segment
  5. Map and rank segments for repair
  6. Validate against a hand-marked drive
