Soil bearing capacity from borehole data

Predict a safe bearing capacity for a foundation from soil test results, and compare with the classical formula.

The brief

Foundation design starts with how much load the ground can carry, and soil tests are costly. Using soil test results such as SPT value, cohesion, friction angle and unit weight, calculate bearing capacity with Terzaghi's formula, then train a model to predict it from simpler tests and compare the two. Good looks like: formula results that match a worked example, a model tested on unseen sites, and a clear warning about where it should not replace tests.

What you will build

  1. Study Terzaghi and Meyerhof bearing capacity
  2. Build or generate borehole records
  3. Calculate bearing capacity for each site
  4. Train a model from simple test values
  5. Test on unseen sites
  6. Write the limits for a site engineer
