Rainfall intensity and urban drain sizing

Analyse rainfall records to find design storms and size a storm drain for a colony.

The brief

Drains designed for ordinary rain flood in heavy storms. From long daily and hourly rainfall records, build intensity-duration-frequency curves, choose a design storm, estimate runoff with the rational method, and size the drain for a small colony. Good looks like: fitted extreme-value statistics, an IDF chart, hand calculations that check the code, and a drain size with a safety margin.

What you will build

  1. Collect rainfall records for a city
  2. Extract annual maximum rainfall for several durations
  3. Fit extreme value distributions
  4. Build IDF curves
  5. Estimate runoff by the rational method
  6. Size the drain and write the design note
