CAN bus logger and vehicle diagnostics

Read messages from a vehicle or simulator CAN bus, decode signals and flag faults.

The brief

Modern vehicles talk over a CAN bus, and technicians read it to find faults. Build a logger that reads CAN frames from a real adapter or simulator, decodes speed, engine and battery signals using a signal database, and flags readings that stay outside normal limits. Good looks like: correctly decoded signals, a time-stamped log, and a short fault report for a technician.

What you will build

  1. Set up a CAN simulator or adapter
  2. Learn the frame format and a signal database file
  3. Read and decode frames with python-can
  4. Log signals with timestamps
  5. Flag faults with limits and trends
  6. Write a diagnostic report
