Ship fuel use and speed optimiser

Model how a ship's fuel use changes with speed, weather and trim, and find the cheapest speed for a voyage.

The brief

Fuel is the largest cost of a voyage, and it rises sharply with speed. Build a model of fuel use from speed, draft and sea state, then find the speed profile that meets an arrival time at the lowest fuel cost and emissions, and show the saving from slow steaming. Good looks like: a cube-law style model checked against vessel data, an optimiser that respects the arrival window, and a cost and carbon estimate.

What you will build

  1. Study the speed and power relation for ships
  2. Create or collect noon-report style data
  3. Fit a fuel model with weather effects
  4. Optimise speed for a voyage and arrival time
  5. Estimate cost and carbon saved
  6. Present to a ship operator
