Modbus energy meter gateway

Read an industrial energy meter over Modbus and publish its values to a dashboard over MQTT.

The brief

Most factories already have meters and drives that speak Modbus but no way to see their data. Build a small gateway on a Raspberry Pi or ESP32 that polls a Modbus device (a real meter or a simulator), converts the registers into engineering units, and publishes them over MQTT to a dashboard. Good looks like: correct register decoding, retries when the device is silent, timestamped messages, and a dashboard with voltage, current, power and energy.

What you will build

  1. Set up a Modbus simulator or a real meter
  2. Read and decode the registers
  3. Publish readings to an MQTT broker
  4. Handle timeouts and bad reads
  5. Build a Node-RED or Grafana dashboard
  6. Document the register map
