Motor speed control with a tuned PID loop

Simulate and then build a PID speed controller for a DC or BLDC motor, and tune it for overshoot and settling time.

The brief

Fans, pumps, drones and conveyors all need a motor that holds its speed when the load changes. Model a motor in Python or Simulink, design a PID controller, tune it, then run it on a microcontroller with an encoder and compare the real response with the simulation. Good looks like: step-response plots with rise time, overshoot and settling time, anti-windup handled, and the gap between simulation and the real motor explained.

What you will build

  1. Model the motor and load in simulation
  2. Design and tune the PID gains
  3. Add anti-windup and output limits
  4. Implement the loop on a microcontroller with an encoder
  5. Compare real and simulated step responses
  6. Test with a sudden load change
