Heart-rate estimation from a wrist sensor

Estimate heart rate from a PPG signal that is noisy because the wearer is moving.

The brief

Wrist-worn heart-rate sensors fail when the wearer runs, because arm motion swamps the pulse. Use PPG and accelerometer recordings to estimate heart rate, remove the motion noise, and measure the error against an ECG chest strap. Good looks like: a filtering pipeline that could run on a small processor, error reported in beats per minute by activity, and the hardest activity named.

What you will build

  1. Load the PPG, accelerometer and reference heart rate
  2. Band-pass filter the signal
  3. Remove motion noise using the accelerometer
  4. Estimate heart rate in sliding windows
  5. Report error by activity
  6. Describe what would change on a microcontroller
