Packaged food nutrition and reformulation explorer

Inspired by publicly reported work at Nestlé

Compare packaged foods by nutrition and find products where a small recipe change would improve their score.

The brief

Nestlé describes using digital tools and AI across its research and development. Take one R&D question a food company faces: which products would gain most from less sugar, salt or fat? Using open product data, compare foods in a category by nutrition, compute a nutrition score, and find the products where a small change moves them to a better grade. Good looks like: clean nutrition data, a correctly computed score, "what if" changes per product, and a short report for a product team.

What Nestlé has said in public about this kind of work, on its own pages:

Make it your own

Study products sold in India: namkeen, instant noodles, health drinks or sweets. Add Indian rules (FSSAI labelling) and check what the labels in your local shop actually say against the open data.

AITeky has no link with Nestlé, which has not reviewed or endorsed this brief. The brief only draws on what the company has published, uses open data rather than its data, and is a learning exercise: don't present your project as Nestlé's work or system.

What you will build

  1. Pick a category (breakfast cereals, noodles, biscuits) and clean its products
  2. Compute a nutrition score from the published rules
  3. Compare brands and find outliers
  4. Simulate recipe changes and their effect on the grade
  5. Write a reformulation shortlist with reasons
