3D printing settings and part quality

Study how print settings change strength and surface finish, and recommend settings for a purpose.

The brief

Print settings such as layer height, speed and temperature trade strength, finish and time against each other, and most users guess. Print or reuse test specimens with varied settings, measure strength and finish, and fit a model that recommends settings for a goal. Good looks like: a designed experiment rather than random trials, results with their uncertainty, and a recommendation chart that a student could follow.

What you will build

  1. Choose factors and levels in a designed experiment
  2. Print specimens or load published results
  3. Measure strength, finish and time
  4. Fit a model of each response
  5. Find the best settings for each goal
  6. Present a settings guide
