Steel plate fault classifier for a rolling mill

Sort steel plates into fault types from their measurements, and show which measurements matter.

The brief

A rolling mill must find faulty plates before they reach customers. Using plate measurements such as size, luminosity and edge indices, classify seven kinds of fault, deal with the uneven class sizes, and explain which measurements separate which faults. Good looks like: per-fault precision and recall, a confusion matrix with the common mix-ups named, and an explanation a metallurgist would accept.

What you will build

  1. Explore the measurements and fault classes
  2. Handle uneven class sizes
  3. Train and compare classifiers
  4. Read per-fault precision and recall
  5. Explain the strongest measurements
  6. Note which faults need a better sensor
