Steel plant energy use and peak demand

Find when a steel plant uses the most power and what drives it, and forecast the day ahead.

The brief

Electricity is one of the largest costs in steel making, and a tariff charges more for peaks. Analyse a year of energy readings from a steel plant, find what drives consumption and power factor, and forecast the next day's use so loads can be shifted. Good looks like: a clear breakdown by hour, load type and day, a forecast better than a simple repeat of yesterday, and an estimate of the saving from shifting load.

What you will build

  1. Load and clean the energy readings
  2. Break down use by hour, day and load type
  3. Study power factor and its penalty
  4. Forecast the next day with a simple model
  5. Estimate the saving from load shifting
  6. Present to a plant energy manager
