Lighter bracket by topology optimisation

Use topology optimisation to design a bracket that is lighter yet as stiff, then check it in a finite-element study.

The brief

Weight costs fuel in vehicles and aircraft, and metal costs money in every part. Take a standard bracket with fixed loads and mounting holes, use topology optimisation to remove material where it does little, rebuild the shape in CAD, and check stress and deflection against the original. Good looks like: a bracket at least 30% lighter, a stress check that passes, and a design that could really be cast or 3D printed.

What you will build

  1. Define loads, supports and the design space
  2. Run a topology optimisation (SIMP method)
  3. Rebuild a clean shape in CAD
  4. Analyse stress and deflection with finite elements
  5. Compare weight and stiffness with the original
  6. Check it can be made by casting or printing
