Gearbox fault diagnosis from vibration

Tell healthy gears from broken-tooth gears using vibration features.

The brief

A gearbox with a cracked tooth shakes differently, but the difference hides in the signal. Compute time and frequency features from vibration recordings, train a classifier to tell healthy from faulty gears, and link the strongest features to the gear mesh frequency. Good looks like: features with an engineering reason, honest testing on separate runs, and an explanation a maintenance engineer can follow.

What you will build

  1. Load healthy and faulty gearbox recordings
  2. Compute time and frequency features
  3. Relate features to the gear mesh frequency
  4. Train and compare classifiers
  5. Test on runs the model has not seen
  6. Explain the result for a maintenance team
